Welcome back to our returning students and welcome to our new families.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a great break over the holidays.

We know that these holidays have provided some challenges with isolation for many of our families and our staff.

As with all businesses moving forward with Covid we will be doing our utmost to keep disruption to a minimum for our classes.

We all know how valuable learning to swim is in Australia, and how much the students benefit from early learning.

We understand parents’ anxiety around children not wanting to get into the pool on the first one or two lessons but understand even just watching is still learning, observing class structure, activities and how other students react is all part of the process. We endeavour to make learning to swim fun and safe for all.

10 Amazing Benefits of Swimming You Never Knew

Sarah Hansen

Swimming has been called the perfect exercise. After all, you can get all of the benefits of an aerobic workout without any damaging impact on joints, and it can be done by both the very old and the very young.

It is utilized by athletes to stay strong and keep fit when recovering from injury, and there is no fancy equipment needed—just you and the deep blue.

Swimming has many more benefits that those obvious advantages seen on the surface; its improvements to overall health go much deeper. So, let’s take a big breath, and dive into the 10 benefits of swimming:

Child swimming with goggles

1. Swimming improves muscle definition and strength.

Swimmers gain muscle strength throughout the entire body. Where runners see muscle build in their legs, swimmers utilize more muscle groups to move through the water. While the legs kick, the arms pull. As the back reaches and rotates, the stomach tightens to power the legs and stabilize the core, making swimming one of the best aerobic exercises to give you a total body workout. Just look at Michel Phelps’ fit physique if you need inspiration!

2. Swimming builds up bone mass.

For years, researchers scoffed at the idea that swimming affected bone mass. After all, only weight-bearing exercises were able to achieve this benefit, right? Not according to research published in the Journal of Applied Physiology. Because there are ethical reasons to avoid in-depth bone examination on humans, the study put rats into three groups: running, swimming, and a control group with no exercise stimulation. While running still showed the highest increase in BMD (Bone Mineral Density),[1] the swimming group also showed benefits over the control group in both BMD and femoral bone weight. While more studies are needed, these new findings show that previous research dismissing swimming’s bone benefits may need to be revisited.

3. Swimming helps you stay flexible

Swimming requires you to reach, stretch, twist, and pull your way through the water. Your ankles become fins and are stretched with each kick as you push off against the liquid pressure. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still stretch on your own, but repetitive stretching found in your various strokes also helps with flexibility.

4. Swimming reduces inflammation.

While swimming’s cardiovascular benefits of strengthening the heart muscle are common knowledge, research also indicates aerobic activities,[2] such as swimming, reduce inflammation that leads to atherosclerosis[3] build-up in the heart.

5. Swimming holds its own for calories burned.

Everyone knows that swimming is a great way to burn calories, but most don’t realize it can be just as efficient as jumping on the treadmill. Depending on the stroke you choose and your intensity, swimming can burn equal or greater calories than running.

Additionally, you don’t have to worry about sweat in your eyes. For example: for 10 minutes of swimming you burn 60 calories with the breast stroke, 80 calories with the backstroke, 100 calories with freestyle, and an impressive 150 with the butterfly stroke.

For perspective, running a 10-minute mile burns around 100 calories. Therefore, a strong 30-min butterfly speed session can burn 150 more calories than running a 5K in the same time frame.

6. Swimming can improve exercise-induced asthma.

Nothing is as frustrating as trying to exercise and being unable to get your breath. Unlike working out in dry gym air or braving seasonal pollen counts, however, swimming allows you to breath moist air while you train. Not only does swimming help alleviate asthma symptoms, studies have shown that it can actually improve the overall condition of the lungs.

In a recent study, a group of children that completed a six-week swimming program saw improvements in symptom severity, snoring, mouth-breathing, and hospitalization and ER visits. These benefits were still noted a year after the swimming program ended. People who don’t have asthma benefit too as swimming increases overall lung-volume and teaches good breathing techniques.[4]

7. Swimming lowers stress and depression.

Love that natural endorphin kick? While many talk about a runner’s high, swimming can bring about all those feel-good emotions too.

In addition to the happy hormones, you also can feel a relaxation response similar to yoga. As I mentioned previously, swimming stretches your body constantly. Combine this with the deep rhythmic breathing, and you can experience a relaxation rush that’s very unique to the sport.

Welcome back to our returning students and welcome to our new families.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a great break over the holidays.

Over the break I read a great article from Swim Australia about some of the reasons every child should learn to swim and it bought back so many fond memories from my own childhood.

Why your child should learn to swim in 2020

Knowing how to swim is an essential and potentially life-saving tool which is particularly important in Australia where we are lucky to be surrounded by some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. We hear a lot about the importance of water safety, but there are also dozens of other reasons why you should get your child to swimming lessons, stat.

Here are just a few:
It will improve general health and fitness
Do you remember coming home from the beach or pool as a kid and feeling so hungry you could eat ten dinners? Whether it’s learning water drills, swimming laps or playing pool games with the whole family, swimming burns a huge amount of energy. Burning energy is essential for maintaining a healthy weight, preventing childhood obesity and preventable diseases such as type 2 diabetes.
Swimming can also improve cardiovascular health, help develop strong joints and build muscle.

.

Knowing how to swim opens up a whole world of sports – There are a lot of popular sports in Australia that require a minimum level of swimming competency for participation such as kayaking, surfing, and water-skiing. Not only does knowing how to swim give your child the opportunity to potentially compete in a range of popular sports, it also means they won’t be left out of school teams and events.

Swimming teaches dedication and endurance – Getting yourself from one side of the pool to the other means not giving up. Learning to swim requires dedication and motivation, and the positive outcomes of swimming will teach your child to persevere during the difficult times.

They’ll make friends – Swimming lessons often include kids from different schools which can help build your child’s social skills and ability to get along with kids they don’t know.

They’ll sleep better – Now there’s a bonus for the whole family! The massive amount of energy expended during swimming often leaves kids (and adults!) feeling exhausted. Add the sun exposure and release of endorphins during an intense swim session and what you’re looking at is a night of quality shut-eye! “

Water Safety

Danuta Kozaki and Clare Blumer, from the ABC wrote
“It is definitely the season of distractions — the knock at the door, the ringing phone, other children crying out for assistance; they are the things that take our attention away from backyard swimming pools.”

I think we should add the distraction of technology as a whole, at the beach, at the pool and at the river, wherever we are around water. We need to be watching at all times.
Please take care as we all enjoy our beaches, rivers and swimming pools.

DON’T LET YOUR KIDS’ SWIMMING SKILLS DROWN DURING WINTER

It might be winter, and you might be rugged up … but facts are, it’s warmer in the water than out of it!!
But sadly, winter swimming is often less popular. However, for those passionate parents, keen to keep the kids kicking during this period, there are some big benefits:

1. Not only will your child be safer in and around water through your persistence, but the consistency will strengthen their skills, ability and confidence; and

2. Every swimming lesson dollar you spend, has even greater value! Why? In some places, due to the cooler season drop-off … – Attending kids may be offered more personalised time with their teacher;- As a result, children may progress more quickly due to the  increased teacher attention; and  – Winter swimming kids will most likely maintain their touch of the water, preparing them for spring and summer.

Rain, hail, sleet, snow or just a chilly day – now there’s never a reason to skip a swimming session this Winter!

SAFER steps for SAFER swimmers

You may have seen them, but do you know them – do you follow them? They’re called the SAFER ‘Layers of Protection’; they’re ASSA’s top-line effective water safety checklist, which we insist should be applied when children are in and around all aquatic environments, to help reduce the risk of drowning tragedies.
SAFER – it’s our acronym, and it’s also our aim … while accidents can and do happen, by ensuring you apply the LAYERS, you’re helping to reduce the risk.Remember the acronym, remember the Layers and help build a SAFER nation of swimmers.

Swimming Smarts

Between having fun and checking out the what’s happening around them, most people don’t think much about water safety — but they should. For people between the ages of 5 and 24, drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death.
It doesn’t have to be that way, though. Most water-related accidents can be avoided by knowing how to stay safe and following a few simple guidelines. Here are a few Swimming Smarts to think about.

“Buddy up!”
Always swim with a partner, every time — whether you’re swimming in a backyard pool or in a lake. Even experienced swimmers can become tired or get muscle cramps, which might make it difficult to get out of the water. When people swim together, they can help each other or go for help in case of an emergency.
Get skilled.
Speaking of emergencies, it’s good to be prepared. Learning some life-saving skills, such as CPR and rescue techniques, can help you save a life. A number of organizations offer free classes for both beginning and experienced swimmers and boaters.
Encourage your everyone to know their limits. Swimming can be a lot of fun — and you might want to stay in the water as long as possible. If you’re not a good swimmer or you’re just learning to swim, don’t go in water that’s so deep you can’t touch the bottom and don’t try to keep up with skilled swimmers. That can be hard, especially when your friends are challenging you — but it’s a pretty sure bet they’d rather have you safe and alive.
If you are a good swimmer, keep an eye on friends who aren’t as comfortable or as skilled as you are. If it seems like they (or you) are getting tired or a little uneasy, suggest that you take a break from swimming for a while.
As we get older we can also overestimate what we are capable of. You may have heard the current ads on radio about drowning now being one of the leading causes of death in males over 65.
Swim in safe areas only and always swim between the flags.
It’s a good idea to swim only in places that are supervised by a lifesavers. No one can anticipate changing ocean currents, rip currents, sudden storms, or other hidden dangers. In the event that something does go wrong, lifesavers are trained in rescue techniques.
Swimming in an open body of water (like a river, lake, or ocean) is different from swimming in a pool. You need more energy to handle the currents and other changing conditions in the open water.
If you do find yourself caught in a current, don’t panic and don’t fight the current. Try to swim parallel to the shore until you are able to get out of the current, which is usually a narrow channel of water. Gradually try to make your way back to shore as you do so. If you’re unable to swim away from the current, stay calm and float with the current. The current will usually slow down, then you can swim to shore.
Even a very good swimmer who tries to swim against a strong current will get worn out.
Some areas with extremely strong currents are off limits when it comes to swimming. Do your research so you know where not to swim, and pay attention to any warning signs posted in the area.

Fee Payments

At the start of term before your child goes into class you will need to pay their fees. Either by direct debit three days prior to your first class or by cash/cheque at the pool on the day of their first lesson of the term.
If your direct debit is within three days of your first class, please bring a copy of your receipt.

Swim Study Shows Benefits

Thanks to the ‘Early Years Swimming Study’, we in Australia have officially known for several years, learning to swim from a young age and regularly, can help kids not only become safer and stronger, but smarter; the study found swimming can help children to develop physical, cognitive and social skills faster than those who do not have lessons.
However, now a report funded by Swim England, has revealed the unique benefits of water making it the perfect place for people of all ages to exercise – particularly those with long term health conditions; regular swimming also helps older people stay mentally and physically fit.
It’s also claimed, swimmers live longer – I’ll say that again – swimmers live longer; I might have to ramp up the laps!! It added that swimming can lower the risk of early death by 28 per cent, and lower the risk of death due to heart disease and stroke by 41 per cent.

What are the Benefits of learning to Swim Several Strokes

• When you swim several strokes you use more muscles and your body gets a better workout.
• The risk of a swimming injury is decreased because you don’t always stress the body with the same movements and the musculature is more balanced.
• Your swimming fun is increased because your lessons are more varied when you can choose among strokes.
• The skills that you learn in one stroke can often be transferred to another swim stroke. For example, the balance skills that you learn for the freestyle are also needed in backstroke. Or the body undulation that you need for the butterfly stroke is also an asset while swimming breaststroke.
• Knowing several types of swimming strokes can also be a big advantage for those in triathlons. Obviously, if you know freestyle you will swim faster and tire less than if you only swim breaststroke during the event. Switching to breaststroke in turn can be interesting when you need orient yourself, as you have better visibility than when you are swimming front crawl. And if you know backstroke, you can roll on your back when you are tired and take a few strokes in that position to recover.

How Can Swimming Help With Maths?

By Professor Robyn Jorgensen
Head of Education – Equity and Pedagogy
University of Canberra.
Swimming teachers use a lot of mathematical language in their teaching. There is a lot of spatial language – about shapes, colours, positions – that helps young children learn many maths ideas.
In the Early Years swim project, I observed teachers using a very rich language of mathematics as they taught their lessons. Children were told to get various shapes or colours from under the water, as well sort objects.
While this seems like a simple idea, the language is really important as it primes students for the mathematics they will experience when they come to school. So, teachers talking about shapes and colours in particular help children to learn many of the pre-number ideas well ahead of their entry to school.

DON’T LET YOUR KIDS’ SWIMMING SKILLS DROWN DURING WINTER

It might be winter, and you might be rugged up … but facts are, it’s warmer in the water than out of it!!

And good news, ASSA member Swim Schools are located around the country, heating learn-to-swim pools to a nice, warm, and comfortable temperature!

But sadly, winter swimming is often less popular.
However, for those passionate parents, keen to keep the kids kicking during this period, there are some big benefits:

1. Not only will your child be safer in and around water through your persistence, but the
consistency will strengthen their skills, ability and confidence; and

2. Every swimming lesson dollar you spend, has even greater value! Why? In some places, due to the cooler season drop-off …
– Attending kids may be offered more personalised time with their teacher;
– As a result, children may progress more quickly due to the  increased teacher attention; and
– Winter swimming kids will most likely maintain their touch of the water, preparing them for spring and summer.

SAFER – it’s our acronym, and it’s also our aim … while accidents can and do happen, by ensuring you apply the LAYERS, you’re helping to reduce the risk.
Remember the acronym, remember the Layers and help build a SAFER nation of swimmers.

Welcome back to our returning students and welcome to our new families.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a great break over the holidays.

Over the break I read a great article from Swim Australia about some of the reasons every child should learn to swim (see below) and it bought back so any fond memories from my own childhood.

Why your child should learn to swim in 2018

Knowing how to swim is an essential and potentially life-saving tool which is particularly important in Australia where we are lucky to be surrounded by some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. We hear a lot about the importance water safety, but there are also dozens of other reasons why you should get your child to swimming lessons, stat. Here are just a few.

Knowing how to swim opens up a whole new world of sports

There are a lot of popular sports in Australia that require a minimum level of swimming competency for participation such as kayaking, surfing, and water-skiing. Not only does knowing how to swim give your child the opportunity to become good at and potentially compete in a range of popular sports, it also means they won’t be left out of school teams and events.

Swimming teaches dedication and endurance

Getting yourself from one side of the pool to the other means not giving up. Learning to swim requires dedication and motivation, and the positive outcomes of swimming will teach your child to persevere during the difficult times.

They’ll make friends

Swimming lesson groups often include kids from different schools, meaning they can help build your child’s social skills and ability to get along with kids they don’t know.

They’ll sleep better

Now there’s a bonus for the whole family! The massive amount of energy expended during swimming often leaves kids (and adults!) feeling exhausted. Add the sun exposure and release of endorphins during an intense swim session and what you’re looking at is a night of quality shut-eye! ”

Water Safety

Over the holidays it has again been bought home to me, how quickly and easily we can get out of our depth and into all sorts of trouble and drown.
We have seen a horrifying increase in the number of drowning’s.
Please take care as we all enjoy the beaches, rivers and swimming pools.

One of the greatest elements of this study is that it shows, from grassroots to green pastures, swimming is the sport and hobby for all of us!
But more importantly, learning to swim from a young age can not only help children develop more quickly than those who aren’t exposed to swimming, but can make them safer in and around water; and who doesn’t want to reduce drowning deaths across the world?!

While the country melted in our baking spring/summer heat, aquatic spaces turned to packed wonderlands across the country, in an attempt for many Aussies to escape the sunny onslaught. But unlike other seasons, this one came at a cost to so many more families … In the six weeks between December 1 to January 15, there were reportedly 57 drowning fatalities in Australia — 78 per cent of the victims aged under four; that’s twice the usual number.

Nearly every day it seemed the news bulletins included a drowning tragedy. On social media, toddler videos scaling pool fences became a regular viral thread, and countless reports of other aquatic accidents where medical care was sought, was just horrifying.

As ASSA CEO, it’s evident more than ever, Australians understand the importance of regular swimming lessons; and we applaud that active response. However sadly, we feel some parents may rely on swim skills alone when it comes to water safety.

While it’s a vital LAYER of Protection, it’s only one layer. Constant adult supervision, having secure fences and gates, and an emergency plan in place – in addition to swimming lessons – will all help in creating a safer swimming environment. However, while the peak swimming season is now over, there are many weeks ahead of swimming opportunities, which ill-managed, could further impact the safety of your family.

ASSA urge adults to: remain alert and attentive  to any swimming children – DO NOT be distracted by smartphones or tablets; continually check the integrity of pool fences and gates, and; ensure furniture near pool barriers, are removed.
Another safety priority is the continuation of year-round swimming lessons. ASSA congratulates parents for making this invaluable commitment; an investment towards a lifetime of safer aquatic activity and enjoyment.

SAFER – it’s our acronym, and it’s also our aim … while accidents can and do happen, by ensuring you apply the LAYERS, you’re helping to reduce the risk.
Remember the acronym, remember the Layers and help build a SAFER nation of swimmers.

1. Not only will your child be safer in and around water through your persistence, but the consistency will strengthen their skills, ability and confidence; and

2. Every swimming lesson dollar you spend, has even greater value! Why? In some places, due to the cooler season drop-off …
– Attending kids may be offered more personalised time with their teacher;
– As a result, children may progress more quickly due to the  increased teacher attention; and
– Winter swimming kids will most likely maintain their touch of the water, preparing them for spring and summer.

Rain, hail, sleet, snow or just a chilly day – now there’s never a reason to skip a swimming session this Winter!
